Kawasaki Z900Rs: A Retro Classic With Modern Performance

The Kawasaki Z900RS is a motorcycle that seamlessly blends nostalgia with modern engineering. Inspired by the legendary Kawasaki Z1 from the 1970s, this retro-styled roadster captures the essence of classic motorcycling while incorporating contemporary performance and technology.

Since its debut in 2018, the Z900RS has earned a reputation as one of the best neo-retro motorcycles available, appealing to both veteran riders who appreciate its classic styling and younger riders drawn to its powerful inline-four engine and refined handling.

Kawasaki Z900Rs: A Retro Classic With Modern Performance

In our opinion Kawasaki has truly nailed the retro aesthetic with the Z900RS, every detail, from the teardrop-shaped fuel tank to the round LED headlight, pays homage to the original Z1. The sculpted bodywork, simple yet elegant side covers, give it a timeless appeal. Even the paint schemes, particularly the classic Candy Green option (pictured), evoke strong memories of the 1970s Kawasaki heritage.

Despite its retro charm, the Z900RS is not a direct copy of the Z1, instead, Kawasaki has modernized its proportions, refining the ergonomics and frame design to suit contemporary riders. The attention to detail is evident, with premium fit and finish, high-quality materials, and an uncluttered, elegant cockpit featuring an analog-style speedometer and tachometer, supplemented by a digital display that provides additional ride information.

At the heart of the Z900RS is a 948cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine, Kawasaki has retuned it to deliver a more linear power curve, prioritizing midrange torque over peak horsepower. Producing around 111 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 72.3 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm, the engine offers a smooth, predictable, and exhilarating ride.

The throttle response is crisp but not overly aggressive, making the Z900RS an accessible and enjoyable bike for a wide range of riders. Unlike some modern sportbikes with peaky power delivery, the Z900RS provides usable performance across the rev range, with a distinctive inline-four growl that adds to the riding experience. The 6-speed gearbox is slick and precise, with an assist-and-slipper clutch that reduces lever effort and prevents rear-wheel hop during aggressive downshifts.

Kawasaki Z900Rs: A Retro Classic With Modern PerformanceWhile the Z900RS carries the looks of a classic motorcycle, it rides like a thoroughly modern machine. The trellis frame is lightweight yet rigid, contributing to a well-balanced and confidence-inspiring chassis. With a wet weight of around 474 lbs (215 kg), the bike feels agile and composed, whether navigating city streets or carving through twisty backroads.

The suspension setup includes a 41mm inverted front fork with adjustable compression and rebound damping, along with a horizontal back-link rear shock offering preload and rebound adjustments. This provides a comfortable ride while maintaining excellent stability and feedback when pushing the bike harder. The upright, neutral riding position is another highlight, ensuring long-distance comfort without sacrificing control.

Braking performance is top-notch, thanks to dual 300mm front discs with radial-mounted four-piston calipers and a single 250mm rear disc. The braking feel is strong and progressive, and the inclusion of ABS as standard adds an extra layer of safety.

Kawasaki Z900Rs: A Retro Classic With Modern Performance

Although the Z900RS leans heavily into its retro styling, Kawasaki has integrated modern features to enhance the riding experience. The LED lighting system provides excellent visibility, while the digital display offers essential ride information, including gear position, fuel range, and temperature.

A two-level traction control system (Kawasaki TRaction Control) is included, allowing riders to select between different intervention levels or disable it altogether. For those like me who just like to jump on a bike and not have to faff around it doesn’t come with multiple riding modes or electronic suspension. The simplicity of the Z900RS is part of its charm, offering a more analogue, engaging experience for those who prefer to rely on skill rather than electronic aids.

One of the standout aspects of the Z900RS is its comfortable ergonomics. The seat height is 835mm, making it accessible for most riders without feeling cramped (to accommodate every rider Kawasaki does offers an Ergo Fit accessory seat which reduces the seat height 35mm). The plush, well-contoured seat provides ample support for extended rides, while the handlebar is positioned higher and closer to the rider compared to the sportier Z900, resulting in a more relaxed stance.

The wind protection is minimal, as expected from a naked bike, but for those planning long-distance rides, a small (meter cover) windscreen can be added to reduce buffeting at higher speeds. The footpeg position is neutral, striking a balance between sporty engagement and long-haul comfort.

Kawasaki Z900Rs: A Retro Classic With Modern Performance

With a 17 litres fuel tank, the Z900RS offers a respectable range, especially considering its efficient engine. Riders can expect an average fuel economy of around 40-45 mpg, depending on riding style. While it’s not the most fuel-efficient option in the class, it balances power and economy well.

For practical use, the bike comes with a small under-seat storage compartment, suitable for a few essentials. Kawasaki also offers optional accessories, grab bars, centre stand, low seat, heated grips etc making the Z900RS a viable choice for light touring.

The Kawasaki Z900RS is an excellent choice for riders who appreciate classic motorcycle aesthetics but want modern reliability and performance. It appeals to those who want a stylish yet practical machine that can handle city commutes, weekend rides, and even occasional long-distance touring. While some may wish for more tech features, the Z900RS thrives in its simplicity, delivering an authentic and engaging riding experience.

Conclusion
I am personally a huge fan of this bike, apart from its stunning looks, just its simplicity you can just jump on and ride it.

Kawasaki has successfully blended the best of both worlds with the Z900RS. It pays tribute to its iconic past while embracing modern performance and comfort. With its stunning looks, refined engineering, and engaging ride quality, the Z900RS is more than just a nostalgia trip-it’s a truly capable motorcycle that stands out in the crowded neo-retro segment.

If you’re in the market for a motorcycle that delivers character, performance, and timeless styling, the Kawasaki Z900RS is a top contender. Whether you’re a seasoned rider looking for a classic-styled bike or a new enthusiast drawn to its blend of history and modern tech, the Z900RS is a machine that is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who rides it.

The Kawasaki Z900RS retails as per the Kawasaki UK website as of 20th March at £11,799 for the Metallic Diablo Black and £12,099 for The Candy Green.
