On 24th September 1972 ex-Triumph development engineer Norman Hyde wheeled his nitro-methanol burning 830cc Trident-powered outfit ‘Roadrunner III’ onto the runway at the RAF base of Fairford in Gloucestershire to set a new world speed record.
Norman has recently been diagnosed with dementia, and in his own inimitable way has turned his personal challenge into a powerful call to action, inviting all motorcyclists to unite in raising vital funds for Dementia UK.
Dementia is a condition that touches countless lives, creating an urgent need for specialised care and support. Dementia UK is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to specialist dementia nursing. Their nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, life-changing support and advice to anyone affected by dementia.
Many riders will already have been touched in some way by dementia, whether through a family member, a loved one or a friend. Today in the UK there are around 944,000 people living with dementia, (including 70,800 living with young onset dementia, where symptoms develop under the age of 65), and right now there are less than 500 Admiral Nurses to support them and their families.
‘Ride to Recall’ will run throughout 2026 and Norman explains how you can get involved and help.
“Take a ride into the unknown, solo or with others. Ditch the Sat-Nav and all other navigational aids and have a real adventure, not knowing where you’ll end up. Set off and 81 miles later [Norman is 81 years old this year] celebrate by making a donation of whatever you can afford to Dementia UK on the JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/page/ridetorecall”
Norman is Patron of the Triumph Owners’ Motor Cycle Club, where you can purchase Ride to Recall merchandise at www.tomccmerchandise.com/shop. A donation from every purchase will be made to Dementia UK.
